Slow print from computer

Print Speeds, stated as pages per minute (PPM), reflect measured values based on Brother's particular testing conditions and are for reference only. Actual print speed may vary depending on printing conditions such as computer configuration, operating system, document complexity, printing frequency, connection method, application software and other factors. To determine your machine's specified print speed, please visit http://www.brother-usa.com.

If the machine is pausing between printed pages when printing, click here for instructions on how to resolve this issue.

Print speed testing does not take into account processing time and data transfer time.

How print speed varies by connection method

Note

To determine the connection methods supported by your machine, visit http://www.brother-usa.com.

USB Connection - T his connection will yield the fastest print speed. We recommend that your USB cable is no longer than 6 feet, and is directly connected from your computer to your Brother machine to prevent data loss. We recommend using a type A/B USB 2.0 interface cable with a USB 2.0 port on your computer, if possible. The machine will work with a USB 1.1 port. Don't use a parallel-to-USB adapter cable.

Wired Ethernet - This is the fastest network connection type available. Use this connection method if you need to print from more than one computer over a network. You may connect your machine with an Ethernet cable to a wireless router and still communicate from your wireless devices that connect to the same router.

Wireless LAN - This is the slowest network connection type available. Wireless signals can be degraded by many environmental factors such as interference from other devices. If your machine is in close proximity to your router, connect your machine with a wired ethernet cable, if supported by the machine. You will still be able to communicate from your wireless devices that connect to the same router.

How to optimize print speed:

1. Check the Quiet Mode setting. Quiet Mode can reduce noise while printing, by decreasing print speed.

Turn Quiet Mode Off

All Settings

a. Press [Settings] → All Settings on the Touchscreen.

b. Press General Setup → Ecology → Quiet Mode .

Note

If Quiet Mode was already turned off, go to step 2 .

Home

d. Press .

e. Attempt to print your original document again.

- If the print speed has improved, then the issue is resolved.

- If the print speed has not improved, go to step 2.

2. Check the connections.

a. Check your interface cable: Use a type A/B USB 2.0 interface cable with a USB 2.0 port on your computer, if possible. The machine will work with a USB 1.1 port. Don't use a parallel-to-USB adapter cable.

b. Turn off your Brother machine.

c. Disconnect and then reconnect the interface cable on both ends.

d. Turn on your Brother machine. Go to step 3.

Wired Ethernet connection

a. Temporarily disable any firewalls that may be affecting print speed.

b. Connect your Ethernet cable directly to the router instead of switch, if possible.

c. Reboot the power to your router. Go to step 3.

Wireless LAN connection

a. Temporarily disable any firewalls that may be affecting print speed.

b. Move the machine as close to the router as possible. Remove any physical or electrical obstacles, such as cordless phones, microwaves, in-use fluorescent lights.

c. Reboot the power to your router. Go to step 3.

3. Verify the printer driver settings.

a. Open the Printers folder. Click here for instructions.

b. Right-click on the printer driver and then left-click on Printing Preferences .

Note

If you're using an XML printer driver, a BrScript printer driver, or any other generic printer driver, please note that these drivers print slower than the standard Brother printer driver. Unless you have a specific reason for using either of these drivers, we suggest you use the standard driver for improved print speed. These drivers are not supported by all models. Click here for details on how to determine the type of printer driver installed.

c. Verify the Media Type setting is correct for your print job.

d. Verify that the Print Resolution is set to the lowest acceptable print quality setting to maximize print speed.

e. Click Apply → OK .

f. Attempt to print your original document again.

- If the print speed has improved, then the issue is resolved.

- If the print speed has not improved, go to step 4.

a. From your document, choose File → Print .

b. Choose the Brother print driver.

Note

If you are using a BrScript printer driver or AirPrint printer driver, please note that these drivers may print slower than the standard Brother CUPS printer driver. Unless you have a specific reason for using either of these drivers, we suggest you use the standard CUPS driver for improved print speed. Click here for details on how to determine the type of printer driver installed.

The BrScript and AirPrint drivers are not supported by all models.

c. Click Print Settings .

d. Verify that the Media Type setting is correct for your print job.

e. Verify that the Print Quality is set to the lowest acceptable print quality setting to maximize print speed.

- If the print speed has improved, then the issue is resolved.

- If the print speed has not improved, go to step 4.

4. Attempt to print a different document from your original application to determine if the slow speed is caused by the document's complexity.

- If the print speed has improved, then the issue is caused by the document that you are trying to print.

- If the print speed has not improved, go to step 5.

5. Attempt a print from a different application to determine if the slow speed is caused by the application.

- If the print speed has improved, then the issue is caused by the application, from which you are trying to print.

- If the print speed has not improved, go to step 6.

6. There are a few things that you can try for further improving print speed:

- Try a different cable within the recommended specs and a different port on your computer.

- Try connecting to and printing from a different computer if possible to determine if the issue is caused by this computer.

Wired Ethernet connection

- Try another ethernet cable and a different port on the router.

- Try printing from another network-connected computer to determine if the issue is with this computer.

- If you're experiencing slow print after recently changing your router or network settings, contact your router manufacturer for support. A setting may be contributing to slow print speed.

Wireless LAN connection

- If possible, switch to a Wired Ethernet connection for faster print speed.

- Try printing from another network-connected computer to determine if the issue is with this computer.

- If you're experiencing slow print after recently changing your router or network settings, contact your router manufacturer for support. A setting may be contributing to slow print speed.
